Definisjon:
Psykisk sykdom hvor underbevisste (ufrivillige) forhold genererer symptomer, og hvor pasienten oppfatter symptomene som organisk betinget
Forekomst:
Dissosiasjon er sannsynligvis underrapportert, men den vanligste varianten av sykdommen (ikke-epileptiske anfall) har en prevalens i området 2-33/100 000
Symptomer:
Er ofte kramper eller nevrologiske utfall, men disse er ofte atypiske og medisinsk uforklarlige for fagfolk (gjenspeiler ofte pasientens subjektive medisinske forklaringsmodeller)
Funn:
Klinisk undersøkelse kan bare gi mistanke om tilstanden, ikke en sikker diagnose. Se etter tegn til dissosiasjon, ikke bare etter tegn på fravær av organisk sykdom
Diagnostikk:
Pasientens mistenkte diagnoser kan ofte usannsynliggjøres gjennom tester og undersøkelser, og dissosiasjon er i hovedsak en eksklusjonsdiagnose
Behandling:
Diagnosen stilles ofte av nevrolog, mens en psykiater er best egnet til å behandle tilstanden. Økt sykdomsinnsikt og gode mestringsstrategier er ofte tilstrekkelig behandling. De fleste blir bedre av behandling, men langvarig oppfølging er gjerne nødvendig
