Definisjon:
Obstruktiv søvnapne er karakterisert ved episoder av fullstendig eller delvis øvre luftveisobstruksjon under søvn
Forekomst:
Prevalens er minst 10-20% blant menn og 3-10% blant kvinner i 30-60 års alder, økende over 60 år, 1-2% hos barn
Symptomer:
Symptomene er unormal pusting under søvn med økt kraftbruk for å overvinne obstruksjon. Medfører gjerne gjentatte oppvåkninger, oppstykket søvn, nattlig hypoksi, hodepine og tretthet/søvnighet om dagen
Funn:
Ofte foreligger overvekt, kort og kraftig hals, høyt blodtrykk, ev. obstruktive forandringer i orofarynks
Diagnostikk:
Diagnosen stilles etter objektiv registrering av respirasjonen under søvn. Mest brukt i Norge er respiratorisk polygrafi, som inkluderer helnatts pulsoksimetri
Behandling:
Kontinuerlig overtrykksbehandling (CPAP) regnes som den beste behandlingen for de fleste, ev. vektreduksjon ved overvekt
